Research and development at the Fachhochschule Landshut are as practicebased as the teaching. The university’s contacts in industry and other organisations determine the areas of specialisation. Several new developments originating from Fachhochschule projects go on to be mass produced. The interdisciplinary centre of competence for microsystems engineering coordinates the projects, sets up information networks and gives advice and support to people starting up their own businesses.

  • Sensor and actuator technology, and the networking of “intelligent” systems are areas of specialisation on the micro-electronics and automation engineering courses.
  • On the vehicle engineering course the faculty of mechanical engineering works closely with manufacturers of cars and commercial vehicles and numerous medium-sized suppliers.
  • A further development of vehicle engineering is lightweight vehicle construction, which aims to make vehicles more environmentally friendly and economical. In 2001 BMW set up a chair and a laboratory at the Fachhochschule Landshut in which special materials and ways of bodymaking are developed and tested. At the same time, a lightweight construction cluster was founded as an interdisciplinary competence network as part of the “Future Bavaria” high-tech offensive. Since 2005, a second cluster in Microsystems Technology, links together enterprises, service providers and research institutions with nationwide dimension in this innovative field.
  • In Social Work, new forms of care (e.g. working with children and young people) which are oriented towards and adapted to the changing structure of society are developed in close collaboration with social organisations.
