The Augsburg University of Applied Sciences is actively involved in applied research and development, especially in the fields of mechatronics, construction engineering and environmental engineering. In the mechatronics department's competence centre, professors deal with subjects in the fields of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and informatics which are characterised by the interrelation of these three disciplines, e.g. processing and production engineering for mechatronic components, CNC programming with 3D image data and the development of processes and techniques for measuring bioelectrical signals (e.g. electronic acupuncture). The qualifying of mechatronic systems and EMC analyses are offered as a service.

Analyses of web composite boards are carried out in the competence centre for construction engineering. A testing machine for test pieces up to 12 m in length with a load of 90 t is available for this procedure. Further examples are projects such as "Weight-bearing capacity of reinforced concrete load-bearing structures subject to bending" and "Reinforcement with high-strength bonding." A coordination office has been set up to support the environmental and process engineering course, which concentrates and channels the many different projects in the Augsburg region. These projects are, for example, in the fields of environmental analytics and regenerative energy technology. The coordination office also provides information for the general public and participates in relevant trade fairs.
